What Are the Characteristics of a Pastors Wife?

I was thinking about being a pastor’s wife. Actually, I’m always thinking about something, but this time it was about the characteristics of a pastor’s wife or first lady of the church (the latter is relevant if you are a member of an African-American church). Let’s talk about What are the characteristics of a pastors wife.

Anyhoo, here is what I was thinking about: should there be required ways a pastor’s wife or church first lady should behave?

What do you think?

At first, I was like, “there are no essential characteristics a pastors wife needs.”

Nope.

Nada.

Pastors wives are as varied as pastors, so no specific characteristics exist for them.

Then, I came to my senses.

Duh!

While pastors wives don’t have a formal job description, of course, some characteristics and attributes serve us well in our role. For example, it helps to be patient, kind, understanding, and flexible.

Let me share my “take” on each. I’d love to hear yours too.

Patience: A Foundational Characteristic of a Pastors Wife

A patient pastors wife will definitely be less stressed out than one who is consistently trying to live by her own agenda (instead of the Lord’s).

Letting go and trusting God prevents all sorts of problems—especially depression.

Rigidity just doesn’t work in our lives. Too many outside factors can change our plans, derail our efforts, and totally recalibrate our day. This is why we’ve got to be patient with life, our husbands, and God’s people.

Why do we grow impatient?

I think I found a great explanation! It’s from Dr. Jim Stone’s article called Understanding Impatience on Psychology Today. He associates impatience with the “adaptive syndrome approach.”

I won’t pretend to fully explain that concept, but basically, he says impatience is triggered when:

  • We have a goal
  • We’ve estimated how long it will take to reach that goal
  • We have other things we could be doing if we weren’t pursuing the goal

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve planned a vacation only to find we must reschedule because a family in our congregation is suffering or a sudden death occurs.

My sweet husband always confers with me to ask what I think or want. Ninety-nine percent of the time, I want to support the church family. I love them deeply.

Guess what? Patience is part of your spiritual DNA. It’s a fruit of the Spirit. It’s inside you because He lives inside you.

Let’s be honest, though, pastors wife…

It can be disappointing not owning your life, but it is part of the cost of the call you’ve accepted.

To be clear, it hasn’t always been easy for me. I won’t pretend it has.

Maybe it’s a Philippians 2:13 thing: “for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose”(Philippians 2:13).

Patience in Everyday Life and Ministry Moments

Sometimes, I miscalculate how long someone will take to grow spiritually. Or, someone stops me in Walmart to share their entire life story, and I really need to get home.

But maybe that encounter was set up by God? Who am I to complain?

James 1:2–3 reminds us: “Consider it pure joy… whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance” (James 1:2–3).

Kindness: A Trait That Sets the Tone for a Pastors Wife

A pastors wife or first lady must be committed to kindness. People are hurting more than ever. We have the privilege to offer love, encouragement, and resources.

Every Christian should walk in kindness—not just pastors wives. But when you’re a pastors wife, you’re loving publicly. More people are watching. More people are depending on your grace.

Listening to problems, giving hugs, and praying for others is part of the role. But again, it’s also part of just being a good Christian.

Is it always easy? Absolutely not. Some people try your nerves. Just like family.

But you don’t react in the flesh. You pull from the Spirit of God inside you.

Yes, kindness is part of your nature too, because it’s fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22).

Understanding: When You Don’t Get It, But You Give Grace Anyway

Understanding doesn’t mean you get everything. It means you choose to offer compassion and grace.

When someone criticizes your husband, the flesh wants to punch back. But the Spirit says, “Pray for them.”

People may lash out because of trauma or spiritual immaturity. It doesn’t excuse their behavior, but it explains it.

Our fight is not against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12). Our response must be from the Spirit, not the soul.

That’s not easy. But this life isn’t about ease. It’s about obedience.

Flexibility: Learning to Pivot in Peace

If patience is the ability to wait, flexibility is the grace to adjust when the waiting isn’t going as planned.

Things will change. Schedules will shift. People will surprise you. Expect it.

And when they do, don’t panic. Just pivot.

Say to yourself: “It’s going to be OK.”

Philippians 4:12–13 says: “I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound… I can do all things through him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:12–13).

That’s your flexibility. You can roll with the punches because Christ gives you strength to handle whatever comes.

Respect: The Quiet Power That Builds a Husband and a Ministry

Let’s talk respect.

Respecting your husband is hard sometimes. I know it. You know it. But it’s a command from God.

Ephesians 5:33 says: “… and the wife must respect her husband.” (Ephesians 5:33)

We don’t do it because he’s perfect. We do it because God told us to.

Tell your husband when you’re honoring him. He may not even notice unless you say it.

Respect doesn’t mean you lose yourself. It means you’re choosing to honor God’s structure in your marriage.

Even if you have to call him a “butt head” in prayer (hey, we’ve all been there), still give respect in the natural.

Because your obedience isn’t about your husband. It’s about God.

Recap: Characteristics of a Pastors Wife

The characteristics of a pastors wife or church first lady include:

  • Patience
  • Kindness
  • Understanding
  • Flexibility
  • Respect

And every single one of them is already in you through the Holy Spirit.

You’re not a microwave Christian. You’re in this for the long haul.

That’s why your growth won’t happen overnight—but it will happen.

God is working in you.

Let Him finish what He started.

  1. It’s 2am in the morning that I read this….. Lying here confused trying to understand what am I here for or where do I fit in!

And decided to google info on Pastors Wives, I am so happy you probably just saved my marriage. Because After so long you don’t understand and after saying a thousand time I can’t be everywhere for everyone. What do you do and still remain sane. I know God has placed me where he wants me…. so I Shall persevere to the end.
    Thank you

    • Oh my sweet sister. You confirmed the existence of this blog. I know it is hard for us in this role…it’s hard for ALL OF US. You know, I’ve spent so much of my life inhibited and insecure. It affected my twenties horribly (in my fifties now). Honestly, I am not trying to sound deep, I promise, but I really do keep my eyes on the Lord and make sure I keep people in their proper place in my life. By that I mean, I love them, I serve as much as I can, but I also don’t allow myself to need their approval. I have this saying “audience of One.” Whenever I feel nervous, insecure or less than, I literally say to myself “audience of One.” It gives me my perspective back. Husband calls me up unexpected … “audience of One.” Have to speak to people and I feel a little unprepared…” audience of One.” I only have to please Jesus and that’s it. My job is to love His people, but I can’t please them all the time, and neither can you. So, take the pressure off, ok? Promise me! <3

      • I am just seeing this, but I needed to read this right at a time when I was wondering why am I in a place where I can’t seem to do anything right.
To say I am frustrated would be an understatement.
        Thanks for your encouragement.

        • Hi Pamela,

I’m really glad you shared this. And I’m even more glad you didn’t keep that frustration to yourself.
That feeling of ‘I can’t seem to do anything right’ is heavier than people realize. I’ve been there. In some ways, I am there now. That feeling can make you question everything—your decisions, your calling, even yourself.

But I want to gently and humbly remind you… that feeling is not the truth about you.

Sometimes we land in seasons where nothing feels like it’s lining up, and it can make us feel like we’re the problem. But often, it’s just a hard season—not a reflection of your worth or your ability.
Give yourself some grace right here.

You’re not alone in this, and you’re not doing as badly as it feels. Neither am I for that matter. 🙂
I’m really thankful you were here to read this when you needed it. That matters.

    • I’m so sorry I’m just seeing this. But, Kim, take as much pressure off as you can. You primary role is to support your husband and so much of that no one sees or knows. It helps me to remember that. It also helps me to keep the congregation in the proper perspective – they are family I love. This means I cannot answer all questions, be everything nor everywhere they want me to be and I gotta be authentically “Me” at all times. Hang in there, Sister! You should also consider joining my new Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/438960462980875. Nothing to sell you or pitch you…just support. Hang in there and I hope life has settled a bit.

  2. AM GREATFUL FROM READING YOUR ARTICLE. MORE ENCOURAGED TO KNOW THAT AS PASTORS WIFE I MUST BE MYSELF NOT ANY OTHER. NOT TO COMPARE MYSELF WITH ANY OTHER OR EVEN ALLOW THE CONGREGATION TO. AM REALY BLESSED. BUT LET ME ASK, WHAT ARE THE AREAS AM SUPPOSE TO SUPPORT MY HUSBAND WHO IS THE PASTOR, ESPECIALLY THE PHYSICAL SUPPORT? WILL BE GREATFUL

  3. The characteristics of a Pastor’s wife is “Being herself” anything that needs to be put on or taken off God will do. Being kind, patient, etc is a characteristic of a Christian (Fruit of the Spirit). I think our expectations of people with “titles” are sometimes unrealistic. If we realize that God called us to be servants, not heroes who know all the answers, can fix everything, can be everywhere (sounds like God). Be yourself, know your husband’s expectations of you, and know your congregation, and most of all know your God. You will excel them all. 🤗
