Hi, Fellow Pastor’s Wife! I don’t have to tell you the challenges and exhaustion associated with being a pastor’s wife. Thinking about some of them and what we go through prompted me to write this post. I’ll focus on my personal experience and hopefully share useful tips on how to thrive as a pastors wife!
You know some of the reasons we may not thrive in this role.
Let me share a few.
For one, the constant need to be emotionally available.
The pressure to maintain a perfect public image and the late nights spent supporting your husband can be overwhelming.
Additionally, the expectations from the congregation can feel never-ending as you navigate your own personal faith journey while also being a pillar of support for others.
Oh, by the way, I’m going to eliminate the apostrophe for reasons I’ve shared here many times. So, ignore the grammatical “pastors wife” spelling.
I can keep going!
How about balancing your family life with church responsibilities while maintaining your own sense of identity?
All of this requires immense strength and resilience.
To thrive in this role, you’ll have to figure out how to balance being a pastor’s wife with being who God created you to be.
I mean as an individual – apart from your husband.
This means understanding the unique responsibilities and expectations that come with supporting your husband in his ministry while also nurturing your own spiritual and personal growth.
This is so important. If you don’t, you’ll end up spinning out faster than a cat chasing a laser pointer!
Remember what makes you a wonderful Christian Woman!
I believe it is vital to find ways to embark on the journey of discovering your own gifts and talents.
This means focusing on YOU!
Along with discovering them – and let me tell you – they can change over time.
Back to my point. In addition to discovering your gifts and strengths, you’ll need to simultaneously find ways to use them to enhance the Kingdom of God.
How are you making others’ lives better? What are you doing to propel the Kingdom of God?
I think you could do this in a lot of ways. I could be in your church.
It could be leading the ministers’ wives at your church or blogging, as I do.
What are you doing? What would you like to do? We do not have a job description.
Pray about it.
If you want to know how to thrive as a pastor’s wife, you have to know WHO YOU ARE as a pastor’s wife.
Being a pastor’s wife is not about doing “one thing at a time…”
No ma’am. The possibilities are limitless with Jesus!
Instead of focusing on one thing, being successful in this role is about harmonizing several aspects of your life so that neither feels neglected; rather, each one flourishes.
That is what thriving is.
Knowing yourself and fully embodying your role is how to thrive as a pastor’s wife.
Look in the mirror. Ask yourself, “Who am I now?”
Let’s get to the tips! I hope they encourage you.
Here we go!
How to thrive as a pastors wife Step 1: Thrive Spiritually
Being a pastor’s wife is actually not as important as being a strong, vibrant Christian woman.
This means you have to study God’s Word for yourself.
Spend time reading, ingesting, and memorizing it so that your speech and words are fueled by it without even trying.
It just becomes part of your identity.
You create a blessed routine of spending time with Him, and when that special time is over, you’re actually a little sad.
This is the first step in learning how to thrive as a pastors wife.
It’s living for Him, Girl – not for people or spiritual or traditional dramatics.
Remember, your role is not who you are.
It is about your preciousness to God.
No, your worth is not defined by the titles you hold, the parking spaces you get to occupy, or the tasks you complete.
But, it is by the intrinsic value you possess as a beloved daughter of the Most High.
Psst… below, you’ll find a simple exercise you can do during your next personal time with the Lord. I hope you’re blessed by it!
Thriving as a pastor’s wife Tip 2: Manage criticism well.
Let me share my very best tips for handling criticism.
First, take a deep breath and listen carefully to what the person is saying without interrupting them. Just listen.
Sometimes, the Holy Spirit will reveal so much when you listen.
If you can, pay particular attention to your facial expression because, if you are anything like me, it can tell a whole other story than your lips. Ha!
Yeah, I have one of those faces.
Seriously.
My Beautiful Pastor’s Wife, understand that feedback, whether positive or negative, is essential to your growth and improvement.
It can sometimes teach you how to be better.
It can also teach you who to ignore.
Accepting criticism is a hard discipline. One I am working on myself.
I am not always successful.
Still, I try not to be defensive.
People often fault pastors’ wives because of our visibility and influence.
Go ahead and listen, then pray about what they shared. God could be using them.
But, so could the enemy.
Pray for wisdom and direction.
This may make us easy marks to jealous people and haters.
Further, you know lots of people expect us to exhibit exemplary behavior, lead numerous church activities, and support our husbands in their ministerial duties while also juggling personal, familial, and professional responsibilities.
Get outta here with all that! It’s too much to internalize.
As you know, the scrutiny we face can be intense.
Who needs that pressure?
You don’t.
Let me tell you what I try to do and how to thrive as a pastor’s wife—at least in my opinion.
Respond politely and thank the person for their input.
Reflect on the critique objectively, and if it is valid, incorporate the changes necessary to better yourself or your work.
Remember, handling criticism gracefully shows maturity. We all want that, right?
One more tip for how to thrive as a pastor’s wife
What does it mean to be accessible in your role?
Being accessible means Sunday mornings are not totally about you, your outfit, or the love and admiration you often receive.
It means being present.
Being in people’s faces enough to know their challenges, have opportunities to pray for them, and be able to touch their lives.
It means I’m not escorted like the Queen of Sheba, chaperoned so much that no one can look me in the eye.
Boo to that.
It means, as I am able, I shut the church down. By that, I mean I am among the last to leave the church on Sundays.
Being accessible and authentic as a pastor’s wife is so key to fostering genuine connections within the church.
By being approachable and transparent, you create an environment where others feel comfortable sharing their struggles and joys, knowing they will be met with empathy and understanding.
That sort of accessibility and authenticity allows you to build trust.
This openness not only strengthens relationships with the women and others in the church but also sets a powerful example of living out your personal faith as a Christian woman (not just as a pastor’s spouse) with integrity.

An activity idea for spending time with Jesus
Relish God’s Love for You
Your goal is to dedicate time to reflecting on and experiencing the depth of God’s love for you through Scripture, prayer, and personal reflection.
What you will need:
- Bible
- Journal or notebook
- Pen or pencil
- A quiet space
What to do:
1. Opening Prayer (2 minutes)
Begin with a short prayer, inviting the Holy Spirit to guide your study and open your heart to receive God’s love.
Here is an example prayer you can use:
“Dear Lord, as I come before You, I ask that You open my heart and mind to truly understand and feel the depth of Your love for me. Help me to see through Your Word how much You care for me and to let that truth transform my heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
2. Read your Bible (5 minutes)
Read and meditate on the following passages. Take your time to read slowly, letting each of the words sink in:
- Jeremiah 31:3: “The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: ‘I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.'”
- Romans 8:38-39: “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
- 1 John 3:1: “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”
3. Reflection and Journaling (5 minutes)
Write down your thoughts and reflections on these verses in your journal or on a piece of paper. It doesn’t have to be perfect or even grammatically correct. You’re talking to your Father.
Consider the following questions:
- How do these scriptures describe God’s love for you?
- In what ways have you experienced God’s love in your life?
- How does knowing God’s love impact your daily life and relationships – both inside and outside the church?
4. Personal Affirmations (2 minutes)
Write and speak aloud personal affirmations based on the scriptures you read.
A few examples include:
- “I am loved with an everlasting love by God.”
- “Nothing can separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus.”
- “I am a beloved child of God, cherished and valued.”
This is speaking God’s Word, Girl!
5. Closing Prayer (1 minute)
End your study with a prayer of gratitude, thanking God for His boundless love.
Another sample prayer:
“Heavenly Father, thank You for Your incredible love for me. Help me to live each day in the light of Your love, and to share it with those around me. Thank You for reminding me that I am cherished and valued. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Optional things you can do:
- Listen to a worship song that focuses on God’s love, such as “How He Loves” by John Mark McMillan or “Reckless Love” by Cory Asbury.
- Spend a few moments in silence, simply resting in the awareness of God’s love for you.
Christian Sister, I hope this simple 15-minute activity helps you connect deeply with the reality of God’s love, bringing encouragement and strength to your daily walk with Him.
My Review and Conclusion
Remember, you have to think of yourself as the valuable jewel you are.
This is the ONLY way you will be a relevant and meaningful pastor’s wife.
This means operating in your gifts and spending time with the Lord every single day so His Holy Spirit and presence fuel you.
It also means not allowing critical people to oppress you.
Instead, you will listen to feedback, weigh the source, and pray about what you should do with the information.
That’s it! I don’t know it all, but I know this much. <3
Hey, I love you so much and am so glad you are on this journey with me.
We got this, and God’s got us!
